What is the Driving Test?

Elite Driving School and Driver Testing in an independent testing organization contracted with the Michigan Department of State to administer Driving Tests to teens and adults.

The Driving Test includes a vehicle component familiarization and safety inspection (not scored), and two scored test segments. The first scored segment focuses on basic control skills and consists of three off-road exercises (parking exercises). The second scored segment focuses on your ability to drive safely and consists of on-the-road driving and expressway driving.

To make a driving test appointment, please call (586) 778-4934. We cannot schedule driving tests through this website or email. Please have the applicant's driver's license number and issue date available to you when making the appointment (both are listed on the Level 1 License or Temporary Instruction Permit).

What are the requirements for the Driving Test?

Teen Requirements

  • Teens (17 and younger) must have Level 1 License for at least 6 months, completed 50 hours of road practice, and completed Segment 2. (Eligibility can be checked by adding six months to the issue date listed on the Level 1 License.)
  • A parent or guardian must be present and in the car for the test. No other people are allowed to be in the car besides the teen, parent/guardian and examiner.

  • On the day of the test, TEENS with a vehicle need the following:
    • Enough fuel to drive for 45 minutes.
    • Level 1 License, Segment 2 Certificate, valid registration and valid proof of insurance -- please verify the documents are not expired and bring them into the office at the time of your test.
    • Payment of $80.
  • On the day of the test, TEENS renting a vehicle need the following:
    • Level 1 License and Segment 2 Certificate -- please verify the documents are not expired and bring them into the office at the time of your test.
    • Payment of $80, plus an additional $25 to rent the vehicle.

Adult Requirements

  • Adults (18 and older) must have Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) for at least 30 days. (The TIP lists the driving test eligibility date, so please book the test appointment after that date.)
  • Applicants must speak English, as that is the only language our examiners speak. If an applicant needs an interpreter, they are welcome to bring someone to interpret for them.

What it the refund policy for the Driving Test?

  • You are expected to have all the documents required for your test and they must be valid, per the Michigan Secretary of State's Driving Skills Test Study Guide. Depending on your situation, this may include a Level 1 License, Segment 2 Certificate, Temporary Instruction Permit, Vehicle Registration and Vehicle Proof of Insurance. All the numbers we need to verify must also be legible (license/permit issue date, license number, VIN number, etc.). If you do not have your documents, you will be given 10 minutes to locate and present them to the examiner. Your test will result in a document failure if you do not present the documents within 10 minutes. Document failures will result in a partial refund of $40 for the driving test. The car rental fee will be fully refunded.

  • Your car is expected to be in good working order, per the Michigan Secretary of State's Driving Skills Test Study Guide. Equipment failures will result in a partial refund of $40. 

  • Off-road/parking test failures and on-road test failures will not be refunded. The test will end when the failure occurs. Therefore, if the failure occurs during the parking test, you will not move on to the driving portion of the test and you will not be refunded. This is a Secretary of State policy.

Practice Lessons

What are Practice Lessons?

(Please note that Practice Lessons are not offered May through August.)

  • We offer practice lessons for teens, and adults of all ages.
  • The first lesson is an evaluation that assesses knowledge and skill level.
  • Subsequent lessons will focus on strengthening skills and preparing for the driving test, if needed. Students will drive on surface streets and the freeway. Instructors will also teach parking skills, including sight-side backing and blind-side backing/parallel parking.

 

What are the requirements for Practice Lessons?

Teen Requirements

  • Teens (17 and younger) must have a valid Level 1 License or valid Driver's License.
  • On the day of each lesson, customers must bring their Level 1 License or valid Driver's License -- please verify it's not expired and bring it into the office with you.

Adult Requirements

  • Adults (18 and older) must have a valid Temporary Instruction Permit or valid Driver's License to take Practice Lessons. Student must speak English, as that is the only language our instructors speak. If a student needs an interpreter, they are welcome to bring someone to interpret for them.

What is the refund policy for Practice Lessons?

(Please note that Practice Lessons are not offered May through August.)

  • Practice Lessons are sold as a package of three 45-minute lessons at $65 per lesson for a total of $195. The total amount must be paid in the form of cash when booking the three appointments. 
  • A fee of $65 will be deducted from the $195 payment if 24 hours advance notice is not given for an appointment cancellation. To cancel an appointment, call our office 24/7 at 586-778-4934; please leave a message with your name, and appointment date and time, if we do not answer.
  • Rescheduled appointments must be completed within one month of the original appointment.
  • Our driving instructors speak English, so the Student must speak and understand English. The Student may bring a translator. If the driving instructor feels that the Student cannot speak and understand English, a full refund will be given.

 

 

Segment 1 (Teens only)

What is Segment 1?

Segment 1 is the first step in Michigan's Graduated Driver License (GDL) process for teens 17 and younger. Segment 1 consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of on-the-road driving.

What are the requirements for Segment 1?

Students must be 14 years and 8 months to 17 years old to attend Segment 1. If you are 18 years or older, please visit the Adults section of our website.

 

What is the Segment 1 cancelation/refund policy?

  • Customers can cancel their Segment 1 registration and request a deposit refund up to exactly one week prior to the start of class. For example, if the class starts at 6 pm on Monday, May 12, 2025, you must email a refund request to elitedrivingschoolscs@gmail.com before 6 pm on Monday, May 5, 2025. A $10 processing fee will be deducted from your refund. 

  • Additionally, customers can switch their registration for Segment 1 to a new class up to exactly one week prior to the start of class. For example, if the class starts at 6 pm on Monday, May 12, 2025, you must email a switch request to elitedrivingschoolscs@gmail.com before 6 pm on Monday, May 5, 2025. Students are allowed one switch and it must be to a class option that is currently available on our website. 

  • Deposit refunds will not be given after exactly one week prior to the start of class. For example, if the class starts at 6 pm on Monday, May 12, 2025, and you email a cancellation/refund request after 6 pm on Monday, May 5, 2025, your request will not be approved.

 

Refund Policy After the First Day of Class:

After the beginning of the third class session, no refund shall be given.   

Segment 2 (Teens only)

What is Segment 2?

Segment 2 is the second step in Michigan's Graduated Driver License (GDL) process for teens 17 and younger. Segment 2 consists of only 6 hours of classroom instruction; there is no on-the-road driving. The following topics are covered: risk awareness, alcohol and driving, drug-impaired driving and illness, distracted driving, drowsy driving, sleep and emotions, anatomical gift donation, and driving test explanation.

What are the requirements for Segment 2?

Students must have their Level 1 License from the Secretary of State for at least 3 months and complete at least 30 hours of driving to attend Segment 2. (Once a student turns 18 years old, they are no longer required to take Segment 2; please visit the Adult section of our website for more information.)
